Circus Girl | The Flying Fruit Fly Circus Print
How would you like to run away to the circus? For the young female artists involved in Circus Girl, this dream became a reality. Be inspired by their skill as they explore their lives in the physically demanding and emotionally confronting circus industry in Circus Girl, opening 28 June at Brisbane Powerhouse.

Celebrating the achievements of girls in The Flying Fruit Fly Circus, Australia’s fulltime circus training institution for kids, Circus Girl is an exciting family show about the demands on the female circus performer. Whether it be tumbling, flying on the trapeze or being thrown through the air, being a top performer requires someone who is prepared to come home with bruises, broken nails and a battered ego. The circus can be tough … growing up can be tough.

For most of these girls, The Flying Fruit Fly Circus has been their education, community and at times even their family. While many of the young artists go on to international careers with the like of Circus Oz and Cirque du Soleil, Circus Girl explores many issues that will resonate with young teenagers everywhere.

Young people today are bombarded with images and role models of what they should and shouldn't do. This performance highlights memories, stories and feelings surrounding the challenges of growing up as a young girl, and especially as a young girl in the circus.

Working with a professional creative team that includes Kim Walker, Director Jodie Farrugia and Writer Andrea Lemon, this project is a chance for the young artists to reflect on their time in the circus, the decisions they have made and how their participation in this non-traditional performance area has influenced them. Circus Girl will demonstrate, not only the amazing physical circus skills, but will provide an insight into the passion, dedication, strength, courage, fear, pain, excitement, anxiety, disappointments and achievements of these extraordinary performers.

Circus Girl has been developed over the past two years as a true collaboration between director, writer and the girls of The Flying Fruit Fly Circus. Based in Albury Wodonga, The Flying Fruit Fly Circus is uniquely positioned to be able to develop and create this work. As the only full time circus company for young performers aged 4 to 18, the company is both a training and performance company, providing a unique opportunity for the young circus artists to be involved in a supportive creative process.

“The local Flying Fruit Fly Circus is world famous – funky, contemporary and setting the agenda for acrobatic arts” - Paul Edwards, The Sunday Age

“The Fruit Flies are fast and delightfully reckless at times…the daring, ever eager Fruit Flies, help make Fusion as thrilling as it is entertaining” - Sydney Morning Herald
