Let’s face it - some children just aren’t that interested in reading. So when something comes along that can turn reading sluggards into avid bookworms, it’s good news for their anxious parents.
Back by popular demand, Imaginary Theatre brings TASHI to life, performing Anna Fienberg’s wellloved adventure books TASHI, the Swan and the Dragon, TASHI and the Magic Flute and TASHI and the Big Stinker.
Throughout Brisbane Powerhouse’s Powerkidz festival (26 June – 7 July), these three different TASHI stories will be performed daily. Special 3 story packages are available and accompanying adults are FREE, so parents can share this special adventure with their children.
Tashi’s world is always full of surprises and dilemmas, not to mention princesses, demons, giants, mysterious strangers, magic flutes and midnight forays into the forest. There are always difficult and unexpected problems that have to be solved with humour, ingenuity and wit.
Each story is a different mini adventure for Tashi and his audience of 4 – 8 year olds. They join in his gigantic journey to save the village from the appetite of a very greedy giant, a mysterious stranger, a deadly dragon. These hilarious tales of tricks, traps and triumphs are played out with an unbelievable amount of energy, by Brisbane-based children’s theatre company, Imaginary. The team of performers bring the stories to dramatic life so vividly that adults and children alike are mesmerised. Then it’s off the library or bookshop because the kids want to read the stories for themselves. Fiona MacDonald, the company’s production manager has been working on the TASHI plays ever since they were first commissioned by the 2004 Out of the Box Festival.
“It was a real surprise to us at first” she recalls, “when we first started performing them, parents and teachers were telling us how many of their kids, even the reluctant readers, were getting stuck into the book after they had seen the shows. Now we’re used to it.”
Fiona puts it down to the company’s innovative blend of physical theatre and story drama. “The storytelling is so clear that even when we performed them in South Korea to children with little English, they were glued to the action.”
The company has subsequently performed a number of Tashi stories in three two-week seasons at the Brisbane Powerhouse in 2004 and 2005.
