Love Lies Bleeding | Sydney Theatre Company Print
Don DeLillo’s shrewd drama and potent meditation on mortality, Love-Lies-Bleeding comes to the Sydney Theatre Company from 7 July with an outstanding cast including Max Cullen and Robyn Nevin.

Alex Macklin (Max Cullen) is a fiercely individual artist. He has lived a vigorous life but now at 70 he is near death and an invalid after two strokes.

Three people will decide his fate. His ex-wife Toinette (Robyn Nevin) and his son Sean (Benjamin Winspear) want him to leave the world with dignity – he would not have wanted to end his life in a drip-fed limbo. Lia (Paula Arundell), his young wife is determined to allow him a natural death despite his persistent vegetative state. She knows Alex is tenacious, just like the exotic plants that he loved – the Joshua tree, larkspurs and love-lies-bleeding. She knows that he will fight.

Don DeLillo, author of 13 books including best sellers White Noise and Underworld, explores the modern meaning of life’s end in Love-Lies-Bleeding. It is a richly imagined, surprisingly amusing and starkly unnerving play that asks the question: how do we reconcile living with dying, dying with living?

Love-Lies-Bleeding had its world premiere with the internationally recognised Steppenwolf Theatre Company in 2005, and received widespread acclaim from critics: “Compelling...touching...sexy...exquisite.” (Chicago Sun), “Love-Lies-Bleeding is a philosophical romance...a metaphor for love and death, wonder and waiting” (Harpers).

DeLillo is recognised as one of the most innovative and distinctive writers in contemporary literature. He has won numerous awards and honours including the US National Book Award. He was also the first American winner of the Jerusalem prize. His latest book, Fallen Man, has just been published.
