Sydney Theatre Company will close its 2006 program with a rare double bill of plays by two of the world’s most acclaimed playwrights David Mamet and Harold Pinter.
Pinter’s A Kind of Alaska and Mamet’s Reunion will be staged at The Wharf from 25 November, with acclaimed actors Justine Clarke (Hedda Gabler, Cyrano de Bergerac, The Herbal Bed), Caroline Lee (Alias Grace, Ordinary Misery) and Robert Menzies (Julius Caesar, Copenhagen).
Andrew Upton, Reunion Director and Cate Blanchett, A Kind of Alaska Director will turn their talents to these powerful plays in their main stage directing debuts.
In Reunion Carol goes in search of her father, Bernie. She hasn’t seen him for 20 years, but when she finds Bernie
he isn’t what she expected – or hoped for. In their individual
loneliness, father and daughter find an understanding, a reunion – of
sorts. Mamet’s much-admired play is a wise and tender meditation on the gap between generations – and the ways we redeem the past.
In A Kind of Alaska, Deborah
wakes after 29 years ‘asleep’, suffering from encephalitis lethargica,
still convinced she’s sixteen. A doctor and her sister delicately
introduce her to an alien world but she’s still mentally stranded ‘in a
kind of Alaska’, isolated from reality. Inspired by Oliver Sacks’
Awakenings, Pinter’s play is a haunting poetic portrayal. He gently and beautifully unfurls Deborah’s realisation that her ‘life’ was a fantasy.
