The play tells the story of two American women, a Park Avenue psychiatrist and a trauma counsellor, who go to Bosnia to help women confront their memories of war. The two counsellors hope to teach the five women refugees how to cope with their trauma. However, each counsellor has her own agenda and it is one of them who learns the most valuable lesson.
When Ensler visited Bosnia she met women who were forced to deal with the aftermath of war and it was their stories that inspired her. “Their community, their holding on to love, their insane humanity in the face of catastrophe and their staggering refusal to seek revenge” that moved her to write the play.
It is a ground breaking play about women and war – about the violence of dark memories and the enduring resilience of the human spirit.
In 1996 Necessary Targets was read by Meryl Streep, Anjelica Huston and Calista Flockhart at a benefit performance to raise money for Bosnian refugees. Vanessa Redgrave did the same in London. It was performed in Sarajevo, the Bosnian capital, with Glenn Close and Marisa Tomei.
Eve Ensler is a New York based, internationally acclaimed playwright whose Vagina Monologues won an Obie Award.
The Old Mill Theatre in South Perth is delighted to be staging Perth’s premier production of this topical play.
