Flaming Locomotive’s debut production is the Australian premiere of The Good Thief by internationally acclaimed Irish playwright and 2006 Tony Award nominee Conor McPherson (The Weir, Shining City), showing in the Blue Room Studio 24 July – 11 August.
Sent on a routine job, a hapless Dublin hard man finds himself caught between two crime bosses, and against his own intentions becomes a fugitive for kidnapping and murder. Add to this the dilemma of what to do with his newly acquired hostages – the wife and daughter of the man he was sent to deal with.
“I sometimes wonder about the sort of person I am, but not for long...”
The Good Thief features Perth actor Allan Girod, seen in Red Ryder/Perth Theatre Company’s 2006 hit production of Dealer’s Choice, and Maj Monologues 2007. Girod played Andrew Mallard in the documentary Saving Andrew Mallard and featured in Air Australia, both for ABC TV. Allan can currently be seen in the TV series Lockie Leonard on Channel 9.
Director and NIDA graduate Michael McCall says he cannot wait to see audience reaction to the play - “McPherson has become heir to the great Irish tradition of absorbing story telling… What makes McPherson accessible as a modern playwright is his combination of the descriptive genius of James Joyce with the machine gun dialogue of David Mamet.”
“The finest dramatist of his generation” - London Daily Telegraph
…Conor McPherson is a writer who combines great character comedy with a real sense of pathos. - UK Daily Mail
