Long before Romeo and Juliet, there was “Butterfly Lovers”. A tale of love doomed from the start.
Hawaiian is proud to present the Australian premiere of the Chinese classic “Butterfly Lovers - The Musical" performed by the world-renowned Dama Orchestra.
This tragic tale of forbidden love revolves around Zhu Yingtai, a headstrong woman determined to be educated as a man, who falls in love with Liang Shanbo, only to discover she has been betrothed to another. Set in the Eastern Jin Dynasty period (265 – 420AD), this Chinese “Yentl” cum “Romeo and Juliet” story is given a modern interpretation by Dama Orchestra.
Dama fuse into this latest incarnation of “Butterfly Lovers” an exquisite blend of contemporary musical staging with period costumes.
“Butterfly Lovers” is a poignant tale, combining the drama of unfulfilled love with a rare insight into the oppressive social constraints of ancient Chinese history in a captivating performance that will linger with audience members long after the final curtain.
Performed in Mandarin and English. Surtitles are provided.
