Once On This Island kicks off the Music Theatre program for 2007 at the Western Australian Academy of the Arts on Saturday 17 March.
A retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic Little Mermaid tale, this bittersweet musical romance gives the age-old story of star-crossed lovers a shot of voodoo intrigue with its sizzling percussive Broadway score. Set against a backdrop of class differences, Once On This Island uses soaring melodies and sultry dances to tell the story of Ti Moune, a poor orphan girl who prays for a future that seems impossible.
But when divine intervention puts Ti Moune face to face with her true love, Daniel, an upper class boy, she begins a journey to find herself and reclaim her heart.
WAAPA’s production will be performed by the 3rd Year Music Theatre students under the direction of Jason Langley, a Sydney director and actor with 19 years’ experience in the industry, with musical direction by Derek Bond and choreography by Jenny Lynnd.
“Once On This Island has the integrity of genuine fairy tales in that it doesn’t lead to a saccharine ending, but to a cathartic, transcendent acceptance of the dust-to-dust continuity of life and death.” - Frank Rich, New York Times
