AckonCahuak Print
AckonCahuakThe pan flutes - more usually heard in South America - produce some of the most haunting melodies it’s possible to hear.

Add some complementary instruments and something very special happens in the hands of an extraordinary group, AckonCahuak. In this case the guitar, violin, bombo (Inca drum) and charango (similar to lute) add further dimension to the ancient Andean sound.

Made up of musicians from many different countries, AckonCahuak are about to release their first CD, to be launched on 4 April 2007 at the Subiaco Church of Christ, with a 45-minute performance.

The CD, called simply AckonCahuak, features original compositions by band members Hugo Alvarez and Patricio Garcia, as well as other songs from various regions of South America.

Also part of the performance are the superb Latin-American dancers Fantasia Latina plus beautiful projected images of Machu Picchu, the famous ancient Inca village, and the Andean mountain AckonCahuak, for which the group is named, from an Inca word meaning “stone sentinel”. The group would like to think of itself as a sentinel of South American culture.

It’s appropriate that the CD doesn’t pinpoint one area in South America on which to focus, as the musicians certainly come from more than one area:

The group’s director and founder, Hugo (Spanish guitar), is from Argentina, Jasmine Skinner (violin) from South Korea, Pablo Peredo from Panama, Patricio Garcia  from Chile, Henry Vilca Yupanki from Peru and Marco Quiroz is from Chile.

A music ensemble of Perth-based musicians, AckonCahuak was born in 2004 when they got together to perform for a much-acclaimed ‘Christmas in the Americas’ concert at Winthrop Hall at The University of Western Australia.

The dream of bringing them together again, as a more permanent ensemble, has stayed with Hugo. More widely known for his Tango 22 band, Hugo has sometimes combined his two groups for concerts, providing an extraordinarily rich mix of Latin-American and Andean music.

“We’re delighted about AckonCahuak’s emergence as a vital, separate entity… and we’re thrilled with the music we’ve created for the CD. Adding the Fantasia Latina dancers has added a visual excitement to our performance that will absolutely charm the audience.”
