In a country which can trace its puppetry traditions back to the Ming Dynasty, no company is held in higher regard than Hsiao Hsi Yuan - the Taiwan Puppet Theatre. Renowned for its technical virtuosity, the company has performed continuously since it was founded nearly a century ago by master puppeteer, Hsu Tien-fu. The current director of Hsiao Hsi Yuan is his son, Hsu Wang, regarded as Taiwan's greatest living puppeteer and living treasure.
Using traditional Quanzhou-style wooden puppets in its performances, Hsiao Hsi Yuan puppet theatre productions are set to the accompaniment of peikuan music and borrow dramatic plots, stage mannerisms and singing styles from Peking opera.
The company is regarded as one of Taiwan's best international ambassadors with a long history of international touring to countless countries around the globe. Multi-award winning, the company took out Best Performance at the Prague international puppet theatre festival in 2005.
Now, for the first time, Melbourne audiences have the chance to experience first hand the magic and fun of this celebrated company when Federation Square present its sensational show, Taiwan Temple Fair at BMW Edge. Bringing to life all the colour and drama of a Taipei market, the master puppeteers of Hsiao Hsi Yuan perform a stunning array of impossible acts worthy of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with lavish costumes, heroes and villains, breathtaking stunts, exciting music and the combined speed and skill of some of the best puppeteers the world has seen.
