This is Set in the Future | La Mama Print
The guests arrive, the future is here. They are fashion conscious, bi-lingual and well into their 100’s. The children of today will be the last to die or the first to live forever. This new black comedy from Glyn Roberts is a densely packed meditation on mortality and love set in the middle of a debauched society party.

Drug fueled cartoon anarchy and jagged edged non sequiturs characterize Robert Reid’s direction which forces the scatological and deliberately punning symbolism of Glyn Roberts’ writing into overdrive. This is Set in the Future is a chaotic evening of crass jokes, violence and bizarre beauty where empty meaning is layered on empty meaning. Reid and Roberts was a theatrical match waiting to happen.

Glyn Roberts is a Melbourne born, Playwright and Bon Vivant, he is half man, half canyon, with razor sharp teeth for feet and portions of margarine for eyes and professes to be the sole possessor of ‘’Butter Vision’’. Glyn has written several plays such as The Desert (Melbourne Fringe 2002), Entrails (Melbourne Fringe 2003) & Eva Braun X 4 (Short & Sweet Sydney 2008), The Jaundice Table, directed by Peta Hanrahan at La Mama for the 2006 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, went down very well indeed, it has also been performed at the 2005 Brighton & Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. This Is Set In The Future is Glyn’s latest work.

Robert Reid is Artistic Director and a founding member of theatre in decay. Robert’s works produced by theatre in decay include Noni Hazlehurst is Dead, All Dressed Up and No-one to Blow, Screaming in America: The Bill Hicks Project, All of Which are American Dreams, A Mile in her Shadow, Sweet Staccato Rising and Empire. Robert directed Tyranny by Barry Dickins at La Mama. His play, Empire, was given a special commendation by Melbourne Fringe in 2004. He was given the R.E. Ross Trust Playwright Development Award for his play A Mile in her Shadow in 2005. His play Sad Bird Boy and the Scalpel Fingered Girl won both the Best Independent Theatre Company Prize and the Best Overall Performance Prize at Short and Sweet Melbourne 2005. His play Portraits of Modern Evil was shortlisted for both the Wal Cherry Award and the Griffin Award and was recently performed by Black Swan Theatre Company in Perth. Robert was an Affiliate Writer at Melbourne Theatre Company in 2006.
