Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake Print

Matthew Bourne's Swan LakeThe West End and Broadway smash hit ballet, Matthew Bourne's SWAN LAKE, will make its long awaited Australian début in 2007.

A winner of more than 30 international theatre awards including three Tony Awards® and an Olivier Award, Matthew Bourne's SWAN LAKE electrified audiences and critics alike when it premiered in London in 1995.

Boldly shattering the traditional concept of swans in tutus, director/choreographer Bourne blends ballet, humour, spectacle and comedy to create a provocative and powerful Swan Lake for our times. Two essentials of the 19th century classic are retained - Tchaikovsky's brilliant score and the story of our constant yearning for an unattainable ideal.

Matthew Bourne's SWAN LAKE has had sell-out seasons across Britain, Europe, the USA and Japan. It is the longest running ballet on the West End and Broadway, has been televised for broadcast and featured in the hit film "Billy Elliot". Bourne is the only British director to have won Tony Awards® for Best Director and Best Choreographer.

The international company of 38 dancers will accompany the original set and costume designs of Lez Brotherston and lighting design of Rick Fisher. Matthew Bourne most recently won Olivier awards for choreographing Disney's new stage production of Mary Poppins as well as Play Without Words, which opened to critical acclaim in New York earlier this year.

Matthew Bourne's SWAN LAKE Australian tour is being presented by Back Row Productions and Michael Chugg Entertainment in association with New Adventures, Bourne's own company.

"A one-of-a-kind Broadway phenomenon."
The New York Times

“this Swan Lake is a blissfully comic, fiercely moving piece of theatre” The Guardian

“this Swan Lake is magical, fantastic, wonderful in the truest meaning of those words”
The Daily Telegraph

"It has confirmed Bourne as one of the most significant figures working in dance today." The Times
