Topology: Spirit Dancing Print
It has been a year of unique collaborations for Topology and on Sunday 9 November 2008 they will take to the stage solo for Spirit Dancing, but with plenty of compositions inspired by mesmerising musicians who can only be with them in spirit.

In Spirit Dancing, Topology will revel in taking the audience inside the sounds.  The concert finds Topology exploring the meditative beauty of Gavin Bryar’s ritualistic music in The Old Tower of Löbenicht, a haunting and deeply moving work.

They also pay tribute to the ‘father of minimalism’, California pianist-composer Terry Riley, performing a collection of his works that are truly inspiring.

Topology’s original works in the concert are marked similarly by reflective moods often combined with an attraction to embodied, rhythmically charged euphoria.  Robert Davidson - Topology’s artistic director and double bass player - contributes to the program with settings of poems by Queenslanders Judith Wright and David Malouf.  However, these are settings with a difference – rather than inviting a singer on stage, Robert takes the recorded voices of the poets, basing his melody on the spoken intonation in their readings.

Californian Composer Terry Riley launched what is now known as the Minimalist movement with his revolutionary classic in C in 1964. This seminal work provided a new concept in musical form based on interlocking repetitive patterns. Its impact was to change the course of 20th Century music and its influence has been heard in the works of prominent composers such as Steve Reich, Philip Glass and John Adams and in the music of rock groups such as The Who.  Terry Riley was listed in the London Sunday Times as "one of the 1000 makers of the 20th Century."

Topology formed when five musicians got together to make music they weren’t hearing anywhere else, and the artists have maintained their commitment to only play music they love.  They are one of three Brisbane Powerhouse resident artists and perform up to 6 shows per year.

Be transported by the sheer sonic beauty of Topology with music that is often humorous and energetic, but is also ventures into areas of the ecstatic and the contemplative without losing its slight hint of edge and danger.  Look out for the next Topology performances in the 2009 program.
