In 2009 Brisbane Powerhouse welcomes back the Splintergroup production lawn. From Thursday 26 – Friday 27 February 2009 the dance theatre production returns following tours of Europe at the Sophiensaela in Berlin, August 2005 and the 2006 Sydney Festival, 2006 Perth Festival and the 2006 Singapore Arts Festival.
lawn has come a long way since it was first performed as a work in progress as the opening event for Tanztage Festival in 2004. Co-produced between Brisbane Powerhouse and Dancenorth in association with Sasha Waltz and guests, lawn was choreographed by Splintergroup and rehearsed at Brisbane Powerhouse. The full production, a highly visual dance-theatre piece that explores ideas through music, design, drama – and of course, movement, was premiered at Brisbane Powerhouse in November 2004 to a rapturous response from Brisbane’s dance and theatre community.
Like its description: ground that is covered with grass, kept closely mowed; or a situation or condition that results from a lack of sunlight, usually characterized by withdrawal from reality, illogical patterns of thinking, delusions and or dreams of open spaces; lawn takes place in a small one-room apartment high above the snow covered streets of Berlin. A man is dreaming of the open lawns of his childhood, but beneath the wallpaper are the shadows of former tenants. In the walls and in the characters’ clothes there is a darker past lurking, but like an immortal cockroach it keeps crawling out, refusing to be silenced and forgotten. Watch as the dancers surrender themselves to the apartment and it's objects, sinking into it and become part of the disturbing dream.
Come and see why this dance theatre horror fantasy has enabled Splinter Group to establish distinguished international reputations. lawn is a truly exciting and ground breaking piece of dance theatre reaching new levels of physicality while delivering in just over an hour a haunting tale of isolation and the desire for wide open spaces.
Together with the creative genius of award winning composer Ian Grandage and designer Zoe Atkinson lawn is a surreal visual experience that has a timeless quality to dark imagery that is reminiscent of Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s films (though more Delicatessen than City of Lost Children). If you missed the eerie performance in 2004, you won’t want to miss the return of this spectacular work.
Splintergroup have worked throughout Europe with some of the continents finest dance companies and choreographers.
