 ‘I came out on the dirt floor in the cellar room, in the noise and the heat and smell of the starch and the sound of water draining, brushes scrubbing and women groaning. That was the start of my life. I’ve been looking for the way up and out since then…’
In remembrance and celebration of our foremothers, the Women’s Circus presents Here, a major theatrical circus production. Marking 100 years of most women’s right to vote in Victoria, Here is a carnival of tears and triumphs, where women unshackle themselves to fly through the air, free their voices to howl and climb on each others shoulders to look into the future.
Green Room Award winner Nadja Kostich, multi award winning composer Irine Vela, a celebrated creative team and a cast of 60 women take you on an unforgettable ride into the fertile terrain of memory and the body, gender and politics.
A feast for the eyes and ears, Here tells the story of an older woman who has a revelation. She sees herself young. She hears ghosts from the past. She becomes many women, including Cassandra who was born 100 years ago under her mother’s skirts, in a giant underground laundry. On the cusp of the women’s franchise, political events seep into the laundry and divide the workers. Through Cassandra the gulf between now and then, us and them, the fantastical and the real is blurred and women from different eras become allied. Don’t miss this circus spectacular!
