The Australian premiere of Rabbit by British playwright Nina Raine for which she was awarded the Evening Standard and Critics’ Circle Awards for Most Promising Playwright, is the final production of Sydney Theatre Company’s 2008 Main Stage Season. The comedy features Romy Bartz, Alison Bell, Ryan Johnson, Geoff Morrell, Kate Mulvany and Toby Schmitz at Wharf 1, with previews from 22 November 2008.
Rather than spend her 29th birthday at her dying father’s hospital bedside, PR
executive Bella (Alison Bell) defiantly decides to party at a slick bar with a tangled web of friends and former lovers. As the alcohol flows so too does the sharp and spiky banter about sex, ambition and relationships. When the smart young professionals begin to reveal their jealousies and insecurities, the sparring gives way to a battle of the sexes.
Relocating the action from London to Sydney, Brendan Cowell makes his Sydney Theatre Company Main Stage debut as a director following productions for STC’s Wharf 2LOUD program in 2006 and 2007.
Rabbit premiered at the Old Red Lion Theatre in London in 2006 and transferred to the West End in the same year. A New York production followed in 2007.
