What will happen at the end of time? When civilisation has been destroyed and the world as we know it ceases to exist? When all that we’re left with are fading memories of times past and an overarching fear of the anarchy that lies ahead?
In the Melbourne premiere of Collapse, Red Cabbage invites audiences to embark on a journey to a secret location in Williamstown, where they’ll be drawn into the daily trials of a post-apocalyptic community seeking grace in the midst of adversity.
The journey begins at Scienceworks Jetty, where the audience will be ushered onto a boat that will ferry them across Hobsons Bay, eventually docking at a site where a shattered community built from the ashes is grappling with the perils that face humankind when everything else has been lost.
This unique and conceptual performance is the work of Red Cabbage, a collective of artists who create site specific performance and installation pieces that aim to provide an enchanting yet unsettling perspective on the dilemmas that face the modern world. Challenging expectations of conventional theatre, Red Cabbage produce primarily visual performances in unconventional environments.
Collapse is no different. As audience members are physically guided through a series of scenes that shed light on the make-up of this post-apocalyptic society they are forced to contemplate the controversial subjects of human nature and individual welfare versus the common good.
Since 2001 Red Cabbage have devised and performed several major productions including Half Full of Happiness, Sacrifice and Hedge-mony, where a vast army of humans with hedges for heads created a maze that the audience were invited to enter. Their work has been presented as part of the Next Wave Festival, Melbourne Fringe Festival and the Commonwealth Games Cultural Festival. Each installation piece has been centred on the notion of encouraging a meaningful exchange of ideas between artists and their audiences.
