Brisbane Powerhouse audiences are set to be taken on a rollercoaster ride from the light heartedness of a comedy of manners to the depths of dark comedy as rapid-fire comedic anarchists, Ridiculusmus, bring two shows to Brisbane in 2009; The Importance of Being Earnest from Wednesday 11 – Sunday 15 February and Tough Time Nice Time from Tuesday 17 – Sunday 22 March 2009.
Returning to Brisbane Powerhouse for the third time after wowing audiences in the UK and the US, The Importance of Being Earnest, co-produced by Brisbane Powerhouse and rehearsed in Brisbane, is the first production of a pre-scripted play by the acclaimed two-man theatre company.
A ‘trivial comedy by two serious people’, Ridiculusmus’ Jon Haynes and David Woods have taken it upon themselves to play all nine characters themselves (sometime even using hand puppets) to pull off this hilarious revisiting of Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy of manners.
Complete with misunderstandings, cases of mistaken identity, rapid costume changes and even some shimmying to The Smiths and Patrick Swayze, this exuberant production - directed by Jude Kelly and with Zoe Atkinson on board as designer - somehow manages never to undermine the true brilliance of Wilde’s original text.
In Tough Time Nice Time, audiences will watch as two naked Germans sit in a Bangkok spa, undertaking an interminable conversation peppered with genocide, movies, celebrity, murder and more. Weaving around their own stories and each others they entwine themselves in each other’s lives, trying to redeem and make sense of their lives and the world through the stories they tell.
Tough Time Nice Time is typical of the form that has come to signify the Ridiculusmus ‘style’, with an original script that is rapid-fire and artistically both challenging and unique – a dark and unsettling comedy that goes nowhere but is fascinating in it’s content.
Founded in 1992, Ridiculusmus produces unconventional and accessible theatre, written, created and performed by David Woods and Jon Haynes and makes work that is both ‘seriously funny’ and deadly serious. They have earned a reputation as one of the most exciting theatre companies working in the UK.
The Importance of Being Earnest runs from 11-15 February, 2009 and Tough Time Nice Time runs from 17-22 March, both in the Powerhouse Theatre.
