“I’ll do this until there is no breath left in my body.” Bernie
Banton (Ex-James Hardie employee, sufferer of asbestosis and
mesothelioma)
DUST is a creative collaboration between the artists behind the
critically-acclaimed ‘We Built This City’ (nominated for 4 Green Room
Awards) and 40 people who are facing life threatening illness due to
exposure to asbestos, sometimes from something as harmless as the
backyard shed.
This fast paced, multi-media theatre production is an opportunity to
peek into the average home presented as a sideshow and come on an
almighty journey. Visit a place in the not too distant past where
domestic products like toothpaste, playdough, hair dryers, and
cigarette filters were all made with asbestos. Have you checked your
shed? Did you check the electric blanket, and the surgical thread?
Asbestos was mined primarily in WA and manufactured by James Hardie
Industries. By the 1950s, a fourth of all houses built in Australia
were clad with asbestos cement sheets. It was used by handy men to
knock up a boat shed or add an extra room onto the family home until
the late 1980’s. Their overalls were washed by housewives and the
asbestos dust residue swept up by their children. Currently there are
hundreds of people facing asbestos-related illness including lung
cancers. The number of illnesses from exposure is estimated to peak in
the year 2020.
DUST is a breath of fresh air in the terrific story of asbestos. Like
the people who battled James Hardie Industries for compensation and
won, it is inspiring, touching and fascinating.
“..exciting theatrical imagery, artistry and heart..like the best of
Australian theatre, it has a laugh, a joke, a great song and a larrikin
smile”
