B Sharp and the team behind The Young Tycoons (Darlinghurst Theatre) and Some Voices (The Lock Up) unite again to bring the Australian premiere of Peter Oswald’s The Golden Ass to the Downstairs stage for the final production of 2006.
British playwright Peter Oswald has adapted Lucius Apuleius’ 2000
year old narrative to create a rollicking adventure of madness and
mayhem, where Greek and Roman myths are soiled by the hooves of the
world’s most wanted donkey. The Golden Ass follows a
man with a near pathological curiosity looking for love and a few
answers to life’s niggling questions. New to the town of Hypata, he
discovers that the locals like to dabble in a little black magic. It is
the tall tale of a hapless Roman, who gains insight into the
destructive power of human desire through his journey as an Ass.
Witchcraft. Sex. Thieves. Donkeys. Goddesses, What could possibly go wrong?
Absolutely everything.
An
epic theatrical experience with 72 characters played by just seven
actors, this production adopts an array of theatrical styles from
physical theatre to puppetry. Beautifully poetic and just a little bit
naughty, The Golden Ass is a hilarious sweeping fable of stories within stories.
The Golden Ass is the first production for Flightpath Theatre; a company set up by director Michael Pigott and designer Katja Handt. With an original music score by Stuart Hunter and lighting by Stephen Hawker, the cast includes Michael Cullen, Megan Drury, Cecily Hardy, Daniel Henshall, Zach Lee, James Lugton and Helen O’Leary.
As befits the story of an insatiably curious man, The Golden Ass
is a little bit mischievous and a little bit zany, and will provide
audiences with a much-needed belly laugh as it propels us into the
silly season.
