Blak Yak Theatre is offering something new for Perth theatre lovers this October at the Subiaco Arts Centre with This Is Our Youth.
Written by Kenneth Lonnergan and directed by Cloverdale resident Scott Northover, the play is an edgy piece set in 1982 Manhattan exploring adolescence and maturity and the Reagan era of the time.
Northover first saw the play when it toured Australia a few years ago and was impressed with the quality of the writing and exploration of youth culture.
“It may be set in the early 1980s but what’s fascinating is how little has changed for young people today,” he said.
“This Is Our Youth examines the impact of drugs, relationships and death on young people, as well as the importance of family relationships.
“It’s an amazing play, given it can be biting and touching but also genuinely funny in parts. The characters are all so well-written it’s easy to imagine they’re real people.”
Northover has taken on the challenge as a first-time director, matched with a cast that hadn’t previously acted with Blak Yak Theatre before.
“Several plays are done once or twice a year but this is something that’s never been done by community theatre in WA before and we saw it as an opportunity to do something different,” Northover said.
“Blak Yak Theatre is loosely based in the inner city but we’ve got several new cast members, showing real talent, from as far away as Rockingham and Joondalup now.”
