Family Stories: Belgrade | Ride On Theatre Print
Playing ‘house’ has never been so catastrophic

Family Stories: Belgrade is a ‘family portrait’ of a developed nation in the process of imploding. AFI award-winning actress Bojana Novakovic will land back in Sydney after filming Edge of Darkness alongside Mel Gibson, and team up with Robert Kennedy to rehearse her adaptation of the Serbian play Family Stories: Belgrade by Biljana Srbljanovic.

A war is over, or it might not be. It is any time after 1999. The inflation rate is absurdly high, with demonstrations in the streets, politicians’ wives publishing self-help books, families are rationing food and kids left unsupervised in their concrete playgrounds. On stage, or at the back of an apartment block, four adult actors play children playing adults: mum, dad, son, and the family dog. This is the game of Family Stories: Belgrade - a thrilling allegory of post war society.

Srbljanovic stunned Europe with her unique approach to expressing unbearable psychological and political anxiety following the breakdown of Serbia. Her work explores the boundaries between theatre and reality, personal and public opinion, decency, comedy and personal tragedy.

Presented by Ride On Theatre (an independent theatre company headed by Novakovic and actor/director Tanya Goldberg) and Griffin Stablemates, this is Ride On’s third show for 2008, following critically acclaimed sell-out seasons of An Oak Tree (Bsharp) and Fake Porno in Melbourne. Ride On is a collective of young professional theatre makers; performers, designers, technicians and musicians who share a passion for theatre as a vital source of our collective cultural conscience, our identity as individuals and as a community.

Ride On Theatre is one of the most exciting companies on the independent theatre scene. The Age 2008
