On Saturday 15 November at 8.00 pm at the Australian National Academy of Music, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Chief Conductor Oleg Caetani directs the Orchestra of the Academy in a program of seminal works by Arnold Schoenberg and Franz Schubert.
The concert begins with Schubert’s Rondo for Violin and Strings with the Academy’s Young Performer of the year finalist Rebecca Chan as the radiant soloist.
The central work is a performance of Arnold Schoenberg’s rarely performed Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte. Lord Byron’s text will be narrated by internationally acclaimed tenor Gerald English. This searing work was written when Schoenberg was living in California in 1942 when the entry of the USA into the Second World War inspired him to set Byron’s sarcastic critique of tyrannical power.
‘The collaboration of Maestro Caetani, one of the most respected conductors on the international circuit with the virtuosic talents of the Academy musicians is a quintessential example of a week in the life of an Australian National Academy of Music musician. Throughout 2008, Academy musicians have benefited from working alongside international master musicians such as Dimitri Sitkovetsky, Angela Hewitt, Emanuel Ax and the Jerusalem quartet in performances, masterclasses and tuition,’ said Brett Dean, Artistic Director.
This final orchestral concert for 2008 is the culmination of one of the most exciting and productive years the Australian National Academy of Music has witnessed. A year that has seen the Academy boast over 120 performances with critically acclaimed, sold out festivals including Piano!; The Viola in my Life; Colour and Light: The Music of Olivier Messiaen and The Schubert Project. In September, three Academy musicians - oboist Jessica Foot, violinist Rebecca Chan and overall winner Maxwell Foster took all three coveted positions in the final of the career making Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year Competition.
‘At this expected sell out concert on November 15, Australian audiences will be able to experience the vital and exuberant music making at the Academy under the expert guidance of Oleg Caetani,’ said Dean.
Rebecca Chan began her musical studies on both violin and piano at the age of four. At 15, she studied at Melbourne University Conservatorium with William Hennessy whilst completing degrees in Medicine and Arts. In 2004, she began studies with Alice Waten at the Australian National Academy of Music. A keen chamber musician, Rebecca has been a member of the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra and guest member of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. She is a member of the Hamer Quartet and is an Australian Chamber Orchestra 2008 Emerging Artist.
Oleg Caetani made his Australian debut in 2001 with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. In January 2005 he took up the post as the MSO's Chief Conductor and Artistic Director and in 2007 he led the MSO on its second European tour, which took in performances in major centres including Berlin, Madrid, Milan and Paris. An opera and concert conductor, he considers these two aspects of his work equally important.
