It’s the night of the winter solstice. Malcolm and Penny Boyce have returned to the site of their wedding night - a big Edwardian hotel room in the Blue Mountains - for their 40th wedding anniversary. Malcolm, a wealthy property developer has planned a ‘re-enactment’ of their nuptials. But when their three sons are drawn into the family conflict, it becomes clear this is a family at war. What follows is an epic struggle for love, power and happiness.
The play, by Australian theatre icon Louis Nowra, is the first part of the Boyce trilogy he wrote for the Griffin Theatre Company, commissioned by its Artistic Director David Berthold. The other two plays are The Marvellous Boy and The Emperor of Sydney both of which also premiered to popular and critical acclaim.
This production by long-standing North Shore-based community theatre company Phoenix, is the first since then. Phoenix is famous for its vibrant productions of challenging Australian and international plays and this taut, sometimes funny, sometimes confronting family drama is no exception!
Directed by Jennie Bazell, the production stars Christopher Clark and Wendy Nash as Malcolm and Penny, along with Don Ferguson, Craig Purdon and Leon Richardson as their sons Keith, Todd and Luke. Set design by Murray Grelis, lighting design by Larry Kelly.
