This October, the production team that gave you the sold out season of the Australian musical, Someone’s Son, brings you a musical retelling of two well-loved children’s fables, both with a modern twist relevant for all the family.
Presented by Bankstown Theatrical Society, the musical Twice Upon A Time is based of the timeless tales of The Little Matchgirl by Hans Christian Anderson, and The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde.
Written by the co-authors of Someone’s Son, Rick Burchall and Greg Crease, the show started out as a one act re-working of The Happy Prince, commissioned by the University of Wollongong. After critical acclaim in its initial season, the show travelled to the Adelaide Festival of Arts where it received further excellent reviews.
Now coupled with the perennial favourite tale of The Little Matchgirl, Bankstown audiences will be the first in the world to see the two musical pieces coupled together as Twice Upon A Time, for a delightful afternoon or evening of musical theatre.
The story of the Happy Prince centres around the tale of a pampered aristocrat whose eyes are opened to the grim realities of the world, and the selfless swallow who helps him make amends for his past carelessness.
“The crux of Wilde’s story is that it is never too late to make amends for society’s wrong’s – something we can all relate to,” said Greg Crease, co-writer and musical director.
“The Little Matchgirl has very similar values and themes, combining with our re-telling of The Happy Prince to provide two dramatically interesting works with accessible and tuneful music for audiences, both young and old.”
The show is directed by Christopher Hamilton with a cast of Bankstown Theatrical Society (BTS) regulars and talented new comers. Nathan Budd makes his BTS debut as the Happy Prince, along with Marike Jago as The Little Matchgirl.
“Nathan Budd as the Prince has a wonderful freshness and simplicity about him which will draw audience’s in, while Marike Jago has a lovely gentleness and vulnerability which will capture the audience’s hearts,” added Greg Crease.
Also making up the cast is Vince Cairncross (Channel Seven’s The Morning Show – Grey Nomads), Ben Dodd, Christopher Griffith, David Cascarino, Victoria Wildie, Tom Green and Sarah Grant.
Twice Upon A Time concludes the BTS 2008 Australian season which earlier this year featured the premiere of the play Eyes Down and the musical based of Peter Allen’s life, The Boy from Oz, which played seasons in Canterbury and Revesby.
Twice Upon A Time runs at the Olympic Parade Theatre, Olympic Parade, Bankstown from October 10th to October 19th. Bookings phone (02) 9676 1191 www.btsinc.org.au
