ACTT Third year actors in
MOJO by Jez Butterworth

JEZ BUTTERWORTH’S MOJO ROCKS SYDNEY

‘…the verbal menace of Harold Pinter and the physical violence of Quentin Tarantino.’
- Sunday Times

With the success of television shows such as Underbelly and the publication of several best-selling books chronicling organised crime in Australia, it has never been more popular to shine a light into the dark corners of society. Jez Butterworth’s Olivier Award winning (Best Comedy) play Mojo does all that and more. A fiercely funny black comedy, energised with a rock style rhythm and edgy violence, Mojo is being presented by the groundbreaking Actors College of Theatre and Television (ACTT) from early October.

The team at ACTT have again taken on another daring production to showcase their graduating actors at their “new venue for Sydney” the Cleveland St Theatre. This grad show of Butterworth’s hard-hitting play Mojo, directed by award-winning director John O’Hare is set in the amphetamine fuelled atmosphere of 1950’s Soho, as rock’n’roll was exciting the youth of England. Against the beat of new music, easy money, temptation and corruption, a dangerous power-game is played out between low-life, small time gangsters.

Mojo opens on Wednesday 1st October and runs to the 11th October at Cleveland Street Theatre at 199 Cleveland Street, Sydney.

Director John O’Hare is well known award-winning professional actor and director and is the Head of Acting at ACTT. John has taught and/or directed at all leading acting schools in Australia and many overseas. Acting credits include Wildside, GP, Heroes, Blackrock, Long Road to Heaven and Rogue Nation. He is also co-artistic director of the acclaimed theatre company,O’Punksky’s. At ACTT his passion for actor training has led to the merging of Morris and Meyerhold methods to create ‘The ACTT System.’

‘It’s such a delight working with the grad boys on the moment to moment realities of this fiercely ironic text. Butterworth has written a play which is in effect a masterclass demanding truthful acting. The training these actors have undertaken at ACTT over the past three years has enabled them to take on the challenge of a multi-layered and challenging work such as Mojo with fantastic results.’ John O’Hare, Director.

The “ACTT SYSTEM” – Dynamic, deep and powerful – Simple extraordinary.

Already boasting an impressive array of graduates, this year’s actors are only the second group to have completed 3 years of training utilising the innovative Eric Morris/ Meyerhold acting technique. ACTT is the only college in Australia to offer this landmark method that is being praised by actors across the world.
