Lead Violin Richard Tognetti’s $10 million violin, and Principal
Cellist Timo-Veikko Valve’s $1 million cello, will be showcased in
Brahms’ Double Concerto for Violin and Cello in the Australian Chamber
Orchestra’s November tour.
Both instruments were bought by anonymous donors last year for the
exclusive use of the Australian Chamber Orchestra. They were made in
the 18th century by the Guarneri family of Northern Italy. There are
only 100 Guarneri violins in the world today (as opposed to 600
Stradivarius) and the greatest violinists of the 19th and 20th
centuries have chosen to play them - Paganini, Wieniawski, Ernst,
Heifetz, Menuhin, Stern and Kreisler.
Richard Tognetti will also direct Beethoven’s Symphony No.8 and
Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony – one of the wittiest pieces in the
orchestral repertoire.
Timo-Veikko Valve – Principal Cello
26-year-old Finnish cellist Timo-Veikko Valve (known as Tipi) joined
the ACO in 2006, after completing his studies in Finland and Sweden and
winning prizes at the Eurovision Grand Prix for Young Musicians and the
Lux Musicae Festival Young Musician Competition. He is a product of the
remarkable Finnish music education system that has also given the ACO
its Assistant Leader, Satu Vänskä.
