 After producing two multi award-winning non-Gilbert and Sullivan productions, The G&S Society of South Australia returns to its roots with a brand new production of the classic operetta HMS Pinafore.
The production, directed by Timothy Ide with musical direction by Alan McKie, will be performed at the Scott Theatre in October this year.
“I have a great deal of affection for the show”, said Ide, “having performed in it three times, designed sets for it twice and illustrated a poster for it three times, but directing is a first.”
This will be the first Gilbert and Sullivan work presented by the Society since the beginning of last year.
The Society’s two previous productions, Into The Woods and Les Misérables were both enormous critical successes, garnering a huge number of awards, including two Adelaide Critics Awards and many Advertiser Oscarts (Into the Woods) and three Adelaide Theatre Guide Curtain Call Awards (Les Misérables).
“We are hoping new audiences who came to see these two non-Savoy operas
will stick around to discover just how much fun our new production of Pinafore is going to be”, said President John Turner.
“Just as our traditional G&S audience has enjoyed our last two not so traditional productions.”
Not to say that this production of Pinafore is going to be exactly traditional, with Ide placing the action in the age of Admiral Nelson, Horatio Hornblower, Captain Crawford of HMS Defiant and Captain Jack Aubrey – somewhat earlier than Gilbert originally intended.
“It was a very spectacular age and that will give our Pinafore a fresh and vibrant look.”
The central theme of Pinafore is class and its effect on relationships.
“The class system in Australia is nowhere near as pronounced as it is in Britain, but it still exists, mainly dependant on profession, wage bracket and/or area in which you live.”
“Can a romantic relationship exist and survive between members of the lower and upper classes?”
Gilbert (as with many of his shows) does not offer any great solution or comment on this, he merely holds the problem up for view and lets the audience make up their own minds.
HMS Pinafore is one of the ‘big three’ Gilbert and Sullivan works – the others being The Pirates Of Penzance and The Mikado.
