He’s been Singin’ in the Rain and hanging out with Guys and Dolls but now Australia’s song and dance dynamo Wayne Scott Kermond is making his Brisbane debut as the Candy Man.
A high energy, sophisticated song and dance experience featuring comedy, tap, impersonations and more created by and starring Wayne, Candy Man celebrates the music of Sammy Davis Jr, one of the world’s greatest entertainers. Making its Brisbane debut in January following critically acclaimed seasons in Sydney and Adelaide, Candy Man takes audiences on a journey from Sammy’s early start in Vaudeville through to his Rat Pack days performing in Las Vegas, Broadway and in film and television, and draws on parallels with Wayne’s own life.
Brisbane audiences last saw the multi-talented Wayne Scott Kermond as Cosmo Brown in the hit musical Singin’ in the Rain in 2002. He brings his musical cabaret Candy Man to QPAC having recently starred in Guys in Dolls in Melbourne. After the Brisbane season of Candy Man he will star in the Sydney season of Guys and Dolls.
Show business is in Wayne Scott Kermond’s blood. Being ‘born in a trunk’ he is the fourth generation performer of the Kermond family. As a young child he learnt to tread the boards while travelling and performing alongside his parents throughout Australia and America. His family tradition has enabled him to acquire talents, such as singing, tap-dancing, acrobat skills and slapstick comedy. Wayne was awarded Musical Theatre Performer of the Year in 2003, Peter Allen Performer of the Year in 2006 and the Musical Theatre Performer of the year MO Award 2008, for his performance in Candy Man.
When he was 11 Wayne was introduced to musical theatre when Betty Pounder cast him as a tap dancing sailor in Gypsy alongside Gloria Dawn and Toni Lamond. The musical’s Barnum, Westside Story, Jonah Jones, Guys & Dolls, HMS Pinafore with Paul Eddington, A Chorus Line, Chicago followed. His television and feature film credits include roles in The Shiralee, The Heroes, and the sequel Heroes 2 – The Return, which broke all ratings records as the most watched mini-series in the UK. Wayne also co-starred in Kings in Grass Castles, the four-part mini-series shot on location in Australia and Ireland, playing the role of Stumpy-Michael.
Capturing the energy and essence of a Sammy Davis Jr. show in Candy Man Wayne is joined on stage by a live band of eight of Australia’s top musicians and a chorus of five of Australia’s best triple threat performers (dancer/singer/actors). The show includes the great songs and moves that made Sammy the star he was including the Soft Shoe Shuffle, The Lady is a Tramp, Birth of the Blues, West Side Story, Mr Bojangles, Gonna Build A Mountain and The Candy Man. Candy Man was conceived and written by Wayne with musical direction by Mark Taylor with assistance from Kerie Biddell. Produced and directed by Wayne’s partner, Katie Kermond, lighting and production is designed by Stephen Wickham and the choreographic team is led by Simon Lind.
If Kermond, who looks like Dustin Hoffman, doesn’t take an award for his outstanding performance, there is no justice. The Daily Telegraph
