Socrates Johnston is Unemployable!
Written and Directed by Matthew Holt
music by Rick Ballan
"A little knowledge is a dangerous thing"
The latest play from the talented team of Matthew Holt (writer/director) and Rick Ballan (music), "Socrates Johnston is Unemployable!" charts the comic misadventures of the naive Socrates Johnston in his various attempts to find employment. Unlike his ancient namesake, however, this Socrates knows absolutely nothing at all — he doesn't even know he knows nothing.
This satirical piece of theatre lampoons the modern world of work and the sets of expectations we have of a life that is worth living.
Matthew Holt and Rick Ballan have written two other successful works of music theatre combining humour, politics and absurdity: "Clean Skins" and "The Von Kleist Show". Of "Clean Skins", the actor John Waters said that it was "The most original piece I've seen in twenty years of theatre: neither musical nor play, it's more like Berlin cabaret but with contemporary Australian humour and entertaining music."
Rick Ballan is one of Sydney's finest jazz musicians and composers and the cast, Paul Roper, Gab Link, and Alan Morris, are graduates of WAAPA and Theatre Nepean and have each over 20 years experience in performing — appearing in films, television and a large and diverse range of stage productions.
