Coming to The Melbourne Fringe Festival 2008...
Foggy London
streets, horse-drawn hansom cabs, opening nights at the opera and
descent into the lower depths of debauchery and moral corruption—the
scene is set for the return of The Picture of Dorian Gray!
Following
a sell-out season earlier in the year, Diatomic Productions
is delighted to be returning to the Monash University Student Theatre
for a second season of this new Australian work.
Based on the
novel by Oscar Wilde, long-time collaborators Greg Eldridge and Liam
Suckling have adapted this masterpiece of gothic horror fiction for the
stage. With a combination of new cast members and others reprising
roles from the first season, the playwrights will be directing this
work from October 7—19.
Set in London at the end of the 19th
century, the play examines 20 years in the life of Dorian Gray, a young
aristocrat who while having his portrait painted meets Lord Henry
Wotton—one of London’s wittiest and most subversive elements. Spurred
by Lord Henry’s conviction that one can only live fully while one is
young, Dorian makes an earnest prayer that he should remain young
forever while his portrait bears the signs of his aging. Through forces
unknown this wish becomes a reality and while Lord Henry continues to
advocate the merits of hedonism, Dorian spirals further into the seedy
underworld of desire.
But can a man really escape the consequence of his actions?
