Mahler Ten | Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Print
The last years of the life of composer and conductor Gustav Mahler were hugely traumatic: his three-year-old daughter, Maria, died; he was diagnosed with the heart condition that would eventually prove fatal and his marriage was in crisis, so much so that he consulted Sigmund Freud.

As for the Tenth Symphony, he did not live to complete it. When musicologist Deryck Cooke prepared his ‘performing version’ in the 1960s, one critic declared: “Mr. Cooke’s brilliant detective work leaves us in little doubt that Mahler’s premature death deprived us of...a searching exploration of a new world of sound and feeling.” This towering work will be performed under the direction of British conductor Mark Wigglesworth.
