Evening pleasure trips on the River Thames were once a favourite diversion of London society. These leisurely entertainments were sometimes accompanied by a floating orchestra - literally, a barge-load of musicians. Handel’s music for just such an occasion - created for an aquatic escapade by George I and his party in 1717 - is the work we now know as the Water Music, some of the grandest and most splendid instrumental music of its time.
In a unique event in the MSO’s musical calendar, this all-Handel program will be conducted by Bernard Labadie, founder and Artistic Director of one of the world’s leading early music ensembles, Les Violons du Roy.
