AIDA | Riverside Lyric Ensemble Print
AIDA , the heart-stopping follow-up to The Lion King, is set to sear in Sydney this October at the Riverside Theatre.

Based on the story from the classic Verdi opera – one of the most thrilling, romantic and tragic tales of all time -  AIDA is a new musical featuring pop legend Elton John's brilliant, modern pop score and the electrifying lyrics of Tim Rice (Superstar, Joseph)

It opens for the first time in the heart of Sydney at Riverside Theatre, Parramatta for a limited season from 24 Oct.

Winner of four Tony® Awards and two Grammys®, AIDA explodes with contemporary energy – and more than a touch of humour.

An epic tale of love, loyalty and betrayal, it chronicles the love-triangle that consumes Aida (a Nubian princess stolen from her country and sold into slavery), Amneris (an Egyptian princess and Aida’s mistress) and Radames (the soldier they both love).

It is John’s and Rice’s first collaboration since the worldwide phenomenon The Lion King.

Says Elton John: “AIDA is not opera. It's truly a pop musical with spoken dialogue and all kinds of recognizable song types: urban-based rhythm and blues, gospel inspired songs, ballads and, of course, Crocodile Rock songs!”

The production is directed by Judith Rowling, with musical direction from Peter Hayward and choreography by Glenette Jeffery. It stars Jessica Mann as Aida, Kathleen O’Neill as her nemesis Amneris and Malcolm Christian as Radames, the passionate warrior tragically caught between love and duty. Simon Greer, Christopher Hamilton, Allan Rowsell, Patricio Ulloa and Anna Stallibrass take the other principal roles with a large ensemble contributing powerful voices to the colour and spectacle of this ground-breaking production.

Riverside Lyric Ensemble was founded in 1991 by Judith Rowling to be a resident theatre ensemble at the Parramatta Riverside Theatres.  The aim of the society, which continues today, is to provide a viable outlet for local talent to perform works that audiences love to see and hear.
