Jo Lloyd has become one of the most impressive presences in Melbourne Dance. The middle ground between violence and lyricism is her favoured mode, both as a dancer and in her recent choreography.
In Press Magazine
Melbourne Spawned a Monster is a new solo work choreographed and performed by Jo Lloyd at Dancehouse from 1 – 5 October 2008.
Melbourne Spawned a Monster takes an intimate and confronting look at the monster that lurks within.
Jo’s strong and multi-directional movement style will create both a powerful and fragile performance that explores the light and shade of the public / private self.
Jo explains, ‘I’m interested in revealing that which is often concealed – the difference between our public and private self’.
Jo will not only be creating and performing in the work, she will also be designing the set and lighting for the show. She will be working with composer Duane Morrison and costume designer Tim Jomartz.
Jo is Dancehouse’s Housemate, an artist-in-residence program designed to support the creation of new work in dance or physical theatre from July until October 2008. Melbourne Spawned a Monster will be the result of her residency.
Jo has had a long and fruitful relationship with Dancehouse, from 1997, teaching and presenting her own work and performing in the work of others.
Jo Lloyd has been performing, choreographing and teaching throughout Australia and overseas since graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1995. She has performed in many works by Chunky Move, Shelley Lasica, and Sandra Parker (Dance Works), and has twice been nominated for a Green Room Award for ‘Best Female Dancer’. Jo’s own works have been presented in Tokyo, Yokohama, the Adelaide Fringe, the Next Wave Festival and the Melbourne Fringe Festival.
In 2001 Jo received an Emerging Choreographers Grant to create Hospitalsandairports. Since then she has created, Public=Un+Public, with Japanese company Nibroll, with support from an Asialink residency, Mute, for Lucy Guerin's 'Pieces for Small Spaces' program and Yes for Nat Cursio's With a Bullet, The Album Project. Jo recently presented Boy as part of Dancehouse’s curated season of girls on boys followed by a sell-out season of Apparently That's what Happened at the Meat Market.
