2 September, 2008 – In just five weeks Sydney will become a brilliant, concentrated burst of chamber music excitement when the inaugural Musica Viva Festival opens. Carl Vine, Musica Viva’s Artistic Director, has assembled a diverse and inspiring collection of international and Australian performers sure to stimulate and impress.
The Festival’s Premier Concert Series features a rich sampling of masterworks and unexpected gems, to be presented in seven 90 minute concerts at City Recital Hall Angel Place.
Highlights of the Premier Concert Series include Angela Hewitt, acclaimed as the pre-eminent Bach pianist of our time. Angela Hewitt celebrates the finale of her monumental year-long tour with a national tour of Australia. As part of the Musica Viva Festival, Angela Hewitt will perform all 48 Preludes and Fugues of Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier over two concerts in City Recital Hall Angel Place Hall on 9 and 11 October. For the past two years her focus has been Bach, through her Bach World Tour. The Festival concerts are a landmark opportunity for Sydney audiences to hear her perform this major cornerstone of Western music. Her performances are noted for their exceptional grace and beauty as well as for their sheer technical mastery.
Hewitt is also participating in the Festival’s inaugural series of Masterclasses which provide the unique opportunity to gain insight into the process of ‘making good music great’. During these Masterclasses, Australian Youth Orchestra Chamber Music Camp students will be tutored by the stars of the Festival including Angela Hewitt and Ian Munro.
The Grammy Award-winning Juilliard String Quartet is recognised as the quintessential American string quartet and unreservedly celebrated for its landmark recordings and performances of the complete Beethoven quartet cycle (one of which the Quartet will play in the Musica Viva Festival). The Juilliard String Quartet will also perform with the Australian String Quartet reaffirming its role as mentor for many leading younger groups. Join them on Wednesday 8, Friday 10 and Sunday 12 October.
Three young charismatic Austrian brothers form the Eggner Trio, which will perform works by Dvořák, Schumann and Brahms, joined by Sally Boud for the Schumann piano quartet and two of Sydney’s foremost string players, Dimity Hall & Yvette Goodchild, for the Brahms piano quintet. Lauded for its immaculate unanimity and polish, the Eggner Trio’s popularity stems from the way it unites centuries of classical music tradition with youthful energy and inventiveness. The Eggner brothers are protégés of some of the world's leading musicians including the Alban Berg Quartet. Book your tickets now for a truly exciting and unique Festival performance, watching them combine with some of Australia’s leading players, on Wednesday 8, Friday 10 and Sunday 12 October.
Other highlights from the Premier Concert Series include the dynamic Jerusalem Quartet, acclaimed as rising stars of the string quartet world, with major successes in Europe, the UK and the US and award-winning recordings. There’s something special in this group’s chemistry which transforms four fine players into an ensemble of the highest order, playing with palpable joy and a sense of natural narrative that brings the deepest rewards to its audiences. The members of the Jerusalem Quartet are protégés of Daniel Barenboim. Kyril Zlotnikov, the cellist, plays Jacqueline du Pré's cello, on loan from Mr Barenboim. The Jerusalem Quartet performs on Friday 10 October and Saturday 11 October.
Also featured within the Premier Concert Series are the Australian String Quartet & Ian Munro followed by Sara Macliver, Jason Noble & Bernadette Balkus performing on Wednesday 8 October; Ian Munro & Bernadette Balkus on Friday 10 October; and Sally-Anne Russell & Australian String Quartet followed by The Song Company on Sunday 12 October.
