I told you it was all about ME!
After a sold out extended season in 2007 The Narcissist returns to the
Roundhouse Theatre, before going on tour. It’s a new version performed
in thrust rather than in-the-round, there are changes to the script due
to the election outcome and we welcome James Stewart to the cast to
play to the role of Jesse.
A deliciously scandalous comedy with a satirical sting in its tail.
Think Oscar Wilde meets Little Miss Sunshine, The Narcissist promises a
naughty night of raucous laughter and very, very bad behaviour.
Xavier is an ALP spin-doctor. He lives in New Farm and is a single gay
man staring down the barrel of middle age. The party has decided to
recapture the Religious Vote and has charged him with the task of
finding a fundamentalist Christian candidate in the Federal seat of
Meninga.
Bronwyn is an interior design columnist with the Sunday Mail. She’s
been single for so long she’s forgotten what romance is. She challenges
Xavier to a duel. It’s time to make the `Big Compromise’. It’s time to
bag a husband by fair means or foul. It’s time “to turn ourselves into
the kind of people other people think it is they want.”
Enter Satchel and Jesse – the unwitting objects of our heroes’ desires!
Satchel is the 3-time winner of Brisbane’s prestigious “Most Eligible
Barista” Award! He’s also in the final 256 contenders for Big Brother
8. He’s half Bronwyn’s age.
Jesse used to be an artist. Now he’s a corporate lawyer. He also used
to be Xavier’s boyfriend. Now he’s back. Just one hitch: he’s getting
hitched. To Y’landah. She’s a homophobic litigation lawyer. With
Tourette’s Syndrome. And a morbid fear of the colour brown. Okay…
Every character in this play is a Narcissist.
Like the superficial and self-obsessed cultures they live and work in, it’s all about winning for this lot.
The Narcissist is the best La Boite production in years – and the
funniest…This is a satirical comedy, with elements of farce and wicked,
sparkling dialogue…This play has some of the funniest lines you'll ever
hear… Hopefully The Narcissist will have an extended season and a
national tour – it deserves it. The Courier Mail
Stephen Carleton has demonstrated yet again what an exciting and
innovative playwright he is with this latest offering at the Roundhouse
Theatre…The Narcissist is a tremendously funny play with a lot to say. ABC Brisbane
…it is a play by the people, for the people, and about the people.
No ifs, buts or maybes, this play is vainly and unashamedly Brisbane.
Funny, charming and clever, The Narcissist is a must-see for all
Brisbanites. Hopefully the rest of the country will feel the same. Australian Stage Online
