Sir Charles Mackerras Returns | Sydney Symphony Print
Sir Charles Mackerras, one of the world’s leading interpreters of the music of Janácek, Dvorák and Smetana, was instrumental in bringing Czech music to our concert halls. Dvorák’s Seventh Symphony is darker in mood than its siblings, reflecting the composer’s uneasy state of mind and the political turmoil of the time. Smetana traces the course of the Moldau River through the Bohemian countryside and Prague, a shimmering, majestic flood of uplifting music. The fanfares of Janácek’s Sinfonietta celebrate the 1908 declaration of Czech independence with music of life-affirming joy.
