Life is Rhythm | Camut Band Print
Beautifully choreographed and brilliantly staged, the Camut Band has to be seen to be believed with their explosive and energetic show Life is Rhythm.  Mixing African percussion, tap dance, voice and sand dance Life is Rhythm will be performed as part of Adelaide Festival Centre's Pivot(al) program, 8 & 9 October at Her Majesty's Theatre.

Direct from Barcelona, these rhythm ambassadors are original, fresh and full of energy, with every performer bringing years of dance, music, choreography and acting experience to the stage.

Life is Rhythm builds on the idea of rhythm as a primal force, having existed since the beginning of time and belonging to all mankind, regardless of race or country. Masters of drum, foot and hand percussion, the Camut Band dance on drums, glide over sand and will have you laughing with their hilarious interactions with one another and the audience.  Accompanied by percussionists on a variety of instruments the Camut Band create a constant pounding beat and electric energy level that is nothing short of spectacular.  Instruments used in the performance include piano, voice, djembe (a skin-covered hand drum), earthenware pots, udu (a Nigerian vessel clay drum), bongos, metallic barrels and cajon (an Afro-Peruvian plywood box drum).

The Camut Band was created in 1995 by the choreographic and tap dancing brothers, Rafael and Lluís Méndez, and Toni Español, leader of the African percussion and dance group Cae Ma Deila. Using drums as dancing podiums as well as playing a range of different instruments, they created Between Feet and Hands, which dazzled audiences and was recognised with the Barcelona FAD Award (Promotion of the Descriptive Arts Awards).

In 1999 they created Life is Rhythm with percussion dancer Guillem Alonso and percussionist Jordi Satorra, which went on to receive rave reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2001 the Camut Band were joined by dancer and choreographer Sharon Lavi and moved onto the international stage with performances in New York, Toronto, New Haven, Hamburg and Genoa.

With an active touring schedule, the Camut Band have performed in Italy, Spain, Holland, Morocco, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Denmark, U.K. and the U.S. In 2005 the Camut Band were chosen to represent Spain in the Expo Aichi in Japan and were also part of the 2007 Hong Kong Arts Festival.

This high-energy performance will appeal to the whole family - prepare to be mesmerised!

"Dancing and druming, with intelligent feet...Propulsive, sometimes hypnotic, wittily nonsensical and downright funny...Not too long, not too short, LIFE IS RHYTHM is just right." The New York Times

"When the venue staff start squabbling over who gets to be on duty for a particular show, you know you're on to a good thing...don't miss this show whatever you do." Evening News
