Perth International Arts Festival is proud to announce the centrepieces of its world-class 2009 Fine Music programme with the first Australian concerts of Angela Hewitt’s international Bach tour and the Australian Premiere of John Adams’ opera A Flowering Tree.
Angela Hewitt has been hailed as “the pre-eminent Bach pianist of our time” (The Guardian) and “nothing less than the pianist who will define Bach performance on the piano for years to come” (Stereophile).
In August 2007 Angela Hewitt embarked on a 14-month worldwide concert tour devoted to the music of Bach, which will cover some 25 countries with performances in more than forty cities including London (Royal Festival Hall) and New York (Carnegie Hall).
The Perth Festival is delighted to announce Angela Hewitt will commence her Australian tour in Perth, presenting West Australian audiences a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience J.S. Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier in its entirety, performed over two nights in October, 2008.
The 48 Preludes and Fugues of Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier make up one of the cornerstones of Western music. To hear them played by memory is an unforgettable experience, and one which is as uncommon as it is moving.
Hewitt is a phenomenal artist who has established herself at the highest level through her unforgettable live performances and superb, award-winning recordings.
The tour celebrates the wonderful voyage Hewitt began in 1994 when she undertook to record all of Bach’s major keyboard works for Hyperion Records—a project that took eleven years to complete. It has been described as “one of the record glories of our age” (The Sunday Times) and has won her a huge following.
Angela Hewitt has an array of awards including:
Gramophone Artist of the Year in 2006
Inaugural BBC Radio 3 Listener’s Award (Royal Philharmonic Society Awards) in 2003
Officer of the Order of Canada in 2000
Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada
Awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2006
