Seven-piece chamber-pop outfit The Villainelles make their Melbourne debut at Arts House, North Melbourne Town Hall, featuring two nights of layered cabaret-folk electronica in a performance of the same name.
Featuring Sydney’s finest mix of noise-art, classical, indie-pop, impro and crossover musical talents, The Villainelles perform to the words of razor sharp Melbourne poets Jordie Albiston, Alison Croggon and Kathleen Mary Fallon.
In a collection of superb musical settings created by award-winning theatre and screen composer Andrée Greenwell, The Villainelles reflect on the words of ten enigmatic women (‘villain-elles’) including Medea, Amelia Earhart, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Princess Di and The Blessed Virgin Mary.
With vocals by Andrée Greenwell and Donna Hewitt fused with violin, keyboard, cello, guitar and drums, Greenwell’s score transforms this eclectic selection of poetry into works of harmonised beauty.
Sydney based Andrée Greenwell has worked extensively as a composer and performer across mainstream and experimental platforms within the Australian performing arts, as well as film and television. As Artistic Director of Green Room Music, Greenwell is a creator of unique hybrid performance works that are developed from a music composition basis.
Greenwell has composed scores for a number of theatre productions including Sydney Theatre Company’s VOLPONE, for which she was nominated for a 2003 Helpmann award in the category of Best Original Score, writing songs for Paul Capsis. She was recently nominated for a 2008 Helpmann Award in the category of Best Music Score for VENUS AND ADONIS, a Malthouse/Bell Shakespeare co-production starring Melissa Madden-Gray and Susan Prior. Greenwell is the recipient of the 2003 biennial NSW Women in Arts Fellowship.
The Villainelles have recorded and performed in Greenwell’s acclaimed collaborations with writers Albiston and Fallon including DREAMING TRANSPORTATION, LAQUIEM, and THE HANGING OF JEAN LEE.
