Soul Theatre Incorporated is excited to produce the new Australian work, Chrysalis by Dina Ross and directed by David Myles. Chrysalis is part of the 2008 Year 12 VCE Curriculum and is presented by La Mama at the Carlton Courthouse from August 6 to 23, 2008.
Chrysalis is a legal drama inspired by the cases of English and Australian mothers being jailed due to multiple Sudden Infant Death Syndrome incidents. This brilliant, deeply thematic script is a legal drama and a psychological in-depth exploration of character. The audience will be intrigued by questions of the mother’s guilt or innocence, and the convoluted workings of the legal system.
David Myles is again Soul Theatre’s director, bringing his highly sensitive creative style to a talented cast. Myles has over thirty five year’s experience, directing theatre, film and television internationally. Whilst working in London, Myles was requested by Sir Laurence Olivier as his director. Myles has previously directed many of Soul Theatre’s compelling productions to rave reviews.
Dina Ross’ plays have been performed all over Australia, London and New York, on BBC and ABC Radio. She is an Affiliate Writer with Melbourne Theatre Company. Ross’ work, The Suitcase, was selected from over 250 scripts for Short & Sweet’s inaugural Festival of One Act plays, 2008.
Alicia Liley, Producer and Artistic Director of Soul Theatre Inc., is passionate about this complex play. Every production since its inception in 1994 has been strongly received by both critics and the general public. “This is an important, multi -dimensional work of great intricacies. I love it!” said Liley.
Soul Theatre was established as an advocate for the voiceless of our society. Partnerships are formed with a strategic community organisati on representative of its themes for each production, so that the plays’ message is disseminated more broadly into the community. The organisation SIDS & KIDS is partnering our production of Chrysalis.
SIDS & KIDS CEO, Karen Passey aptly wrote in her letter of support: “The death of a child is something no mother (or indeed other family member) would wish to endure…but to be charged with murder just because someone thought that having two babies die (must be criminal) …is incomprehensible.”
