Indonesia Pusaka | Kwartet Punakawan Print
“The beautiful themes of Indonesia's most beloved traditional tunes flowed from his [Suprana’s] fingers like sparkling jewels” The Jakarta Post

Celebrated pianist Jaya Suprana will escort Sydney audiences on a rich musical journey through the Indonesian archipelago at The Studio on Sunday, August 10.

Joined by guitarist Jubing Kristanto, percussionist Junaedi Musliman and bass player Heru Kusnadi, Kwartet Punakawan specialises in the timeless sufi music of Indonesia, combined with contemporary instrumentation.

Formed in August 2005, just days before Indonesia celebrated the 60th anniversary of its independence, the quartet discovered an immediate musical chemistry during an impromptu jam session.

Named after a Javanese wayang comedy whose characters are sent to bring peace, love and happiness to the world, this one-off concert will be an aesthetic masterpiece for the heart and soul.

Part concert, part lecture, Indonesia Pusaka presents the music from some 120 ethnic groups in a magnificent tribute to his country. Suprana vividly communicates the joy of Indonesian music as he guides the audience from Aceh to Batak lands, to Padang and to Sunda, and on to Central Java and Ambon.

Along with Indonesia’s complex traditional sounds, the quartet performs melodies with an Arabic influence called dangdut, more romantic treatments that sound like American arrangements from the 1950s, and some Latin rhythms from South America – bossa nova and tango.

Kwartet Punakawan will also perform the various pentatonic musical scales of different indigenous cultures on the grand piano. Central Java has a musical pattern unique in the world, and the music of Sunda, West Java, sounds similar to the music of Japan.

“Indonesia possesses so many beautiful melodies from its different cultures, and the different musical scales create a beautiful and surprising frisson,” Suprana says.

Just at the moment when an ear tuned to the Western scale is expecting a certain note, a different, surprising and more exquisite one follows to bring an indescribable experience and sometimes a profound emotion – a shiver up the spine, or a tear in the eye.
