A triple of bill of cutting edge dance exploring comic and serious themes will be presented by local dancer turned producer, Jeni Sutton at The Blue Room Theatre from July 24 – August 8.
Sutton debuts in her role as producer alongside fellow choreographers Aisling Donovan and Melbourne artist Tina Evans in Dance a la Carte. The three choreographers have come together for the first time since graduating from WAAPA in 2003 to create this program of new dance.
Dance a la Carte serves up a smorgasbord of choreography and themes with dynamic solos focussing on personal isolation, sex trafficking and a wistful duet about two elderly bingo players reflecting on their outrageous lives.
Sutton chose to select works with small casts as the performance space is the perfect venue for intimate theatrical performance. It is ideal for intense and focussed work such as solos and duets,” she said. “When seated in the theatre you are only a metre away from the performers so everything is in close up – expression and nuance is everything - you don’t miss a beat.”
First on the menu is Room with Her View, devised, choreographed and performed by Aisling Donovan, which explores the isolating nature of social anxiety and how it results in withdrawal from the real world.
Toys, a solo devised and performed by Melbourne artist Tina Evans, takes dance into the dark world of sex trafficking. Combining dance, film and text, Toys reflects a frightening trade where children are packaged products stripped to the core.
The third work is Legs 11, created and performed by Jeni Sutton alongside Aisling Donovan. This is a comic duet that tells the tale of two elderly bingo–goers, whose lives may not have turned out quite as planned but whose resilience is tinged with humour. They recall the days of drinking, misbehaving, smoking, drinking some more and of course, the love of their life - bingo!
