Asylum | La Mama Print
AsylumIt is 1993 and a young woman from China knocks on psychiatrist Lally Black’s door and asks for help seeking asylum from Australia. Lally longs to help but doubts the facts of the case. But Siying won’t leave her alone, intruding into her home and dreams. Lally’s nights fill up with public servants, singing amputations and the gloomy prophecies of a ghostly tortoise, while her courage ebbs away.

Dark, humourous and melancholic, Asylum explores the paralysis of Australia’s moral imagination and asks: What are the consequences for asylum seekers if prejudice and naivete are allowed to rule?

Winner of the 2005 Wal Cherry Play of the Year
