A man alone. Another on the edge. A businessman unravels; a woman in the shadows. Two men eat their last meal.
“Antony writes with the edge of a razor blade”, says Director, Lynne Ellis. Lynne has directed over 50 productions at La Mama and has a reputation for developing new writers of talent.
These four short plays are deep, dark and poetic and tinged with
humour. They explore the underbelly of male psyche entering neurosis
and taboo. The language dives into the darkness which it richly
celebrates.
These pieces were performed and filmed at Brightspace Gallery in St
Kilda one night last November. A relationship was created between
camera, camera operator, actor and audience to enhance the emotion and
intensity of Antonys’ work. This footage will be woven into the La Mama performance.
Antony Ley (writer) lives in St Kilda and is a poet who has performed at many venues and Festivals. He first met Lynne Ellis
12 years ago and harboured the idea of her directing his first play.
The time has come. His language celebrates the darkness and ranges from
the poetic to the cutback frugality of Beckett. Antony feels
influenced by the Australian tradition of Daniel Keene, Stephen Sewell,
Graham Henderson and John Romeril. He sees his relationship with his
father who was a POW at Changi as creating something else within him.
Lynne Ellis (Director) has a reputation for her innovative works. She has been Director in residence at RMIT for two decades. Lynne has worked at La Mama with writers such as Sam Sejavka, Raimondo Cortese, Barry Dickins and Mari Lourey.
