Crossing Roper Bar Tour 08 is a remarkable celebration of the unique collaboration between the Wagilak Gujarra/Nyilapidgi musicians from Ngukurr in East Arnhem Land and the Australian Art Orchestra, led by internationally acclaimed musician, Paul Grabowsky.
Beginning on August 17 for the Darwin Festival, the Ngukurr and Australian Art Orchestra musicians with special guest, Ruby Hunter will travel from the Northern Territory to Western Australia over a three week period visiting Katherine, Timber Creek, Kununurra, Warmun, Wangkatjungka, Broome, Djarindjin/Lombadina, Beagle Bay, and One Arm Point, culminating in a public concert at the Perth Concert Hall on Friday, September 5.
Some of Australia’s most stunning locations, including the spectacular Katherine Gorge in the Northern Territory and the stunning coastal vista of Roebuck Bay in Western Australia will be the backdrop to a series of special outdoor performances. The tour also includes public concerts, workshops, community collaborations, artist talks and school presentations.
Initiated in 2004/05 by composer/musician, Paul Grabowsky, Crossing Roper Bar is the ongoing collaboration between the AAO and Ngukurr musicians and has received critical acclaim as a breakthrough process of a serious bridging of the cultural divide between Indigenous and non-Indigenous music and cultures.
The ‘song men’ of Ngukurr have worked closely with AAO Musical Director, Paul Grabowsky to create a contemporary rendering of their ancient songs, which simultaneously preserves their rare cultural artefacts and creates a dazzling new musical hybrid acclaimed for its haunting melodies, cultural sensitivity and sheer musical virtuosity. The collaboration is an evolving process that is affected by the unique experiences the touring group has with each local community they visit, making every performance special and unique.
The 08 Tour has resulted from the joint commitment of Tura New Music and AAO to further develop the collaboration and share the outcomes with as much of Australia and the world as possible. Artistic Director of Tura New Music, Tos Mahoney said that 08 Tour is an iconic cultural event of immense cultural significance. “Crossing Roper Bar is one of the most exciting cultural events in our time,” he said. “At its heart is a dynamic exchange of ideas between cultural traditions, ancient and contemporary, and a thrilling example of the transformative power of music, which crosses all boundaries. The 08 Tour is a remarkable opportunity for all people to connect with this wonderfully inspirational project.”
An electrifying marriage of the very old with the very new, Crossing Roper Bar Tour 08 is a celebration of country, of ceremony, and of the power of music to build enduring bridges across cultures, time and space.
