Ballet at the Regal | West Australian Ballet Print
This July, West Australian Ballet performs for the first time at the iconic Regal Theatre, the most unique art deco building still standing in Western Australia.  The Regal originally opened in 1938 as a cinema, screening Shall We Dance? with Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. Now 70 years later, in keeping with the tradition of entertaining audiences with the magic of dance, West Australian Ballet will perform an impressive mixed bill.

Headlining the West Australian Ballet program – and back by popular demand after a sell out season at the Quarry Amphitheatre – is Petr Zuska’s Bolero, choreographed to Ravel’s mesmerising score. Bolero is famous for its exhilarating climax and performances had audiences rising to their feet in a standing ovation earlier in the year.

Also not to be missed is the premiere of a new work, Lacrimosa, by acclaimed Australian choreographer Natalie Weir. Lacrimosa is choreographed to Mozart’s final and most performed work, Requiem.  Natalie has worked extensively with Australian dance companies as well as in America and Hong Kong.   According to the New York Times after a recent performance “Ms Weir established an empathetic connection between the audience and the performers. The audience gave a whooping ovation”.

In addition, Ballet at the Regal will include the hilarious work, Maria’s Dream from Petr Zuska’s and Paul Lightfoot’s evocative Step Lightly, which were also performed to sell out audiences at the Quarry Amphitheatre last summer. Catherine Goss’s moving short work Arba’a, featuring music by Jeff Buckley, and Marcia Haydee’s Autumn Pas de Deux, a free reconstruction of an original work choreographed for her by John Cranko from Glazunov’s Four Seasons will compliment this sensational first season at the Regal Theatre.
