Be careful what you wish for…
Inspired by media reports about a girl who faked her own abduction, Girl Who Cried Wolf is a bold new Australian play from the AWGIE-Award-winning writer Angela Betzien.
Commissioned by Sydney Opera House, this world premiere production follows on from a season of play building workshops in 2007.
Examining the cult of celebrity and the machinations of the schoolyard hierarchy, Girl Who Cried Wolf is part modern day fable and part social commentary.
Haunting and darkly humorous, the play explores the fears and fantasies of Laura Black (Gemma Cavoli), a young girl desperate to be noticed. Real life, inner life, second life…where does fiction end and the actual world begin?
Set against the backdrop of a local shopping mall’s Idol singing competition, the awkward 11-year-old suffers the pain of growing up differently in a claustrophobic new housing estate in the suburbs.
When Catriona Dijon (Samantha Tolj), the most popular girl at school disappears, fear and hysteria grips the community. But all is not what it seems as the two girls collude to construct a gigantic life-changing lie.
Created specifically for 8 to 12 year olds, this premiere production unites Betzien and Arena Theatre Company, renowned for their dynamic fusion of theatre with film and live music.
The mix of dramatic action, multimedia and sound creates an exciting performance experience that explores fear, conformity, isolation, fantasy, celebrity and the media.
