What remains of a life once a person has died?
What can those who are left make of the bits and pieces?
Janek was a Polish migrant who struggled as an artist and left his family to return to Poland when Margaret and her sister Alex were girls. After his death, Margaret embarks on a quest to make sense of their severed relationship and to piece together a fragmented cultural heritage. She searches for, and gathers, the things he left behind. Alex is crucial to Margaret’s search, at times an ally and at times a rival.
As she edges towards the space between memory and the imagination, the living and the dead, Margaret confronts her longing for an imaginary place of stories, memories and historical fragments. She develops her own artistic expression as well as facing battles around heritage and possession.
Moving between past and present, the play unfolds through live music performed by the actors, text and physical theatre. Three Oaks depicts a domestic environment off -axis. The design and the music played on accordion and violin create a sense of place that is constantly shifting. Ladders rising from a floor of pines needles and tilted at precarious angles, allow the audience to view the whole and to look through gaps to focus on the detail. There is the sense of eavesdropping on intimate conversations, of being lulled into a journey of the imagination and then jolted into another reality. Three Oaks evokes the cultural turmoil of migration but also suggests that new possibilities may be liberated through this journey.
